Proposed speed limit changes
The proposed option aims to reduce the national speed limit for single carriageway roads to promote a decrease in collision rates and severities on those roads. Recognising that the lower speed limits applicable to goods vehicles (>7.5t) can lead to greater driver frustration and decrease journey time reliability, the option also considers increasing the speed limits for goods vehicles (>7.5t) on single and dual carriageway roads.
Given the above the following changes to speed limits are being considered:
- Do-Minimum: No change to existing speed limits
- Option 1: Reduce national speed limit on single-carriageway roads to 50mph and increase the speed limit for goods vehicles over 7.5 tonnes on single-carriageways to 50mph and dual-carriageways to 60mph.
The proposed changes to the speed limit would apply for all single carriageway roads to which the national speed limit currently applies. The proposed changes to speed limits for goods vehicles (>7.5t) would apply for all single and dual carriageways in Scotland.
