20mph roll out in Argyll and Bute
New 20mph speed limits are being implemented in several communities across Argyll and Bute to improve road safety and save lives.
The schemes are currently being implemented on sections of the trunk road in the following locations:
- Ardrishaig
- Connel
- Inveraray
- Tarbert
- Tarbet
The 20mph limits will be brought in through a Temporary Traffic Regulation Order in the first instance to allow for monitoring and evaluation to be carried out prior to a decision being made on whether they should become permanent. The maximum permitted duration of a temporary order is 18 months.
Construction is currently underway, and residents may notice signs and poles being installed in preparation for the new speed limits. These will remain covered until the limits come into effect.
The signs will start to be uncovered from the 7th November 2025, at which point the new speed limits will become active.
Cabinet Secretary for Transport Fiona Hyslop said:
“Road safety remains an absolute priority for the Scottish Government, and that is why we are investing a record £48 million this financial year into roads safety activity and programmes. One death is one too many and I am focused on making our roads safer through Scotland's Road Safety Framework to 2030.
“Reducing excessive speed is a key focus of that work. Research shows that if someone is hit by a car at 20mph, they are seven times more likely to survive than if they were hit at 30mph.
“The implementation of more 20mph speed limits will improve road safety – keeping people safe and making it easier for people to choose walking, wheeling and cycling for everyday journeys.”
