A9 Dualling: Tay Crossing to Ballinluig traffic management

Significant traffic management measures will be implemented on the A9 between Jubilee Bridge and Ballinluig from Monday 5 January 2026 ahead of major construction works starting in the spring for the A9 Dualling: Tay Crossing to Ballinluig project.

A temporary 40mph speed restriction will be in place from Monday 5 January and is expected to remain in place until the dualling becomes operational by the end of 2028. The restriction will be in place 24 hours a day, in both directions.

The temporary speed restriction is necessary to ensure the safety of road users and the workforce as works are carried out for the A9 Dualling: Tay Crossing to Ballinluig project. Further changes to the temporary traffic management will be gradually implemented throughout February and March ahead of major construction commencing in Spring, this will include narrowed lanes, restrictions on right-turns and installation of a temporary roundabout – further details on these measures will be communicated in advance.

The project will provide a safer, more resilient link for road users travelling on the A9 through the upgrade of approximately 5 miles (8.2km) of single carriageway to dual carriageway. In addition to providing safety benefits, the project will deliver a range of benefits for the local community and businesses including training, educational and employment opportunities.

Pedestrian access will be maintained at all times, and public transportation links will remain active along the route, with bus stops remaining in use both northbound and southbound.

Road users are advised to approach the area with care and allow extra time for their journeys whilst these vital works are undertaken. Current journey times through the 5 mile (8.2km) site area are expected to increase by around 1 minute following the installation of the temporary traffic management which will be in place until the roads are opened to traffic by the end of 2028.

Ruth Whillis, Project Manager for Transport Scotland said:

“Its great to see this further progress on Dualling this fourth section of the A9. The installation of the 40mph temporary speed restriction through the site area is a tried and tested approach to keeping both road users and those working in close proximity to the A9 trunk road safe. Please allow extra time for your journey and as the full traffic management will be installed progressively, traffic layouts may change during the first few months of the year so take care on approach to the area and adhere to all temporary signage in place.”

Road users should note that existing overnight traffic management in place on the route for site clearance works will continue to operate under a reduced temporary speed restriction of 30mph in works areas.

Road users should also note that during the operation of these measures laybys on the project corridor will be closed to the public, with specific laybys being available to vehicles carrying large loads at the north and southern extents of the corridor.

Works are weather dependent and may be subject to alteration if weather conditions are not favourable. Please refer to the Traffic Scotland website for live updates.
