AWPR Overnight 10mph Convoys for 1.2km Section of A90

Convoy working and a 10mph speed restriction will be in place over four nights next week (between Tuesday 14 March and Friday 17 March) for a short 1.2km section of the A90 between Blackdog and Balmedie.

These measures, which will come in to effect each night around 11pm and then be removed the following morning by 6am before the traffic starts to increase, will enable the contractor to undertake barrier works as part of the Aberdeen Western Peripheral Route/Balmedie to Tipperty (AWPR/B-T) project.

These additional safety measures for both northbound and southbound traffic are required to enhance the safety of road workers, who will be working in close proximity to traffic.

A Transport Scotland spokesperson said:

“This traffic management, which includes lane closures in both directions on the A90, requires road users to stop at temporary traffic signals. The contractor will escort road users through the works at 10mph as part of a convoy for safety reasons using an official site vehicle.

“Convoy working has been used at this location overnight before with delays of around 10 minutes for road users.

“The contractor has timed these works to minimise the impact they may have on road users. However, we would like to encourage those drivers who would normally consider using the A90 between Blackdog and Balmedie overnight to plan their journey in advance. They should also give themselves additional travelling time so that they can reach their destination safely and on time.”

When complete, the AWPR/B-T will help to reduce congestion, cut journey times, improve safety and lower pollution in Aberdeen City Centre. It will also enable local authorities to develop public transport solutions.

The AWPR/B-T project is expected to bring in an additional £6 billion to the north-east economy and create around 14,000 jobs over the next 30 years, including more than 1,000 jobs for the construction industry. There will also be tangible benefits for the business community and road users with better journey time reliability and reduced congestion.
