International acclaim for A9 Safety Plan

The A9 Interim Safety Plan has been recognised for the contribution it has made to improving the safety of the world’s roads, with judges particularly impressed by its size and complexity and evidence based approach.

The plan was developed in response to concerns about the operation of the A9, which links central Scotland to the Highlands. It concentrates on a range of improvements in the three areas of Education, Engineering and Enforcement and includes the introduction of an average speed camera system as well as an increased speed limit of 50 mph for HGVs.

Chair of the A9 Safety Group, Stewart Leggett commented:

“Our main objective is to make the A9 a safer place and following the implementation of our Interim Safety Plan we are seeing real reductions in the number of people being injured on one of Scotland’s busiest roads.

“It has been a partnership effort to get us to this stage and everyone from Police Scotland to the local authorities have played their part in the success of the plan.

“This recognition from His Royal Highness is testament to the hard work and determination shown by the group. Every road death is one too many and we will continue to explore all avenues to sustain the positive changes that we are seeing on the A9.”
