Peak ferry fares removed for Northern Isles residents

The Scottish Government has today announced the removal of mid and peak season fares for islanders travelling on the Northern Isles Ferry Services.

As part of the Scottish Budget for 2026/27, £1.8 million will be invested in the lifeline ferry services, currently run by Serco NorthLink, to reduce fares for islanders to low season rates, making travel more affordable year-round.

Transport Scotland will now work with the operator on the detail and timing of the change, which will be confirmed in due course.

Cabinet Secretary for Transport Fiona Hyslop said:

“I am pleased that the Scottish Budget for 2026/27 focuses significant investment on making lifeline ferry fares cheaper for island residents in Shetland and Orkney.

“The Scottish Government fully recognises the importance of these lifeline ferry links in keeping communities across the Northern Isles connected with family, work and leisure opportunities on the Scottish mainland. By removing mid and peak seasonal fares for islanders, we are continuing to invest in making ferry travel more affordable and saving people money.

“Alongside continued funding for vessel replacements, including procurement for two new freight flex vessels to serve the Northern Isles, this will help us ensure that these lifeline ferry links continue to deliver for the communities they serve for years to come.”
