The bridge works will be undertaken by Transport Scotland’s Operating Company BEAR Scotland Ltd. Work will commence in April 2015 for a period of 9 months.
Why is it needed?
The bridge works will be of significant benefit to the A830 and continue a major investment programme (started with the replacement of Dearg Bridge in 2014) in bridges along this lifeline route. The design for the new bridge takes into account the environmental challenges of the location, recycles materials from the old bridge and will provide a low maintenance bridge designed to last 120 years. Stone recovered from the old bridge will be used for the facing parts of the new structure to help it blend into its rural Highland surroundings.
What is involved?
The Garbh bridge replacement works will comprise replacing the existing life expired bridge with a single span reinforced concrete structure. The new bridge will have a 6 metre carriageway, 1 metre hard strips, 1.5 metre verges and masonry parapets. The A830 will be widened locally on the approaches to the bridge.
How much will it cost?
The cost of the works is approximately £800,000.
What stage is it currently at?
Works to construct the new bridge will commence in May 2015 for a period of 8 months.
How will it affect me?
During the period of the works, traffic will be transferred to a one way, off-line temporary diversion controlled by traffic lights. A temporary bridge will form part of the diversion. The temporary traffic lights will help to maintain traffic flows, while a reduced speed limit of 30mph will be in place on the diversion route for the safety of motorists, other road users and site operatives.
What is being done to reduce the environmental impact?
The environmental impact of the works will be minimised. Control measures will be put in place to protect the local environment.
