How smart travel works in Scotland

Smart travel is about providing modern, digital, and electronic options for tickets and payment on public transport. For you, this means paper-free access to travel across multiple types of public transport using smartcards or mobile tickets.

We’re working with the industry to capture secure, standardised, and best fit technology to give you consistent smart travel options for your journey, and a better experience on public transport.

Smart travel in Scotland allows you to:

• load smart tickets on to a single smartcard to travel across different operators and different types of transport in Scotland
• download your operator’s mobile app and use a mobile ticket (where available)
• use regional scheme tickets to travel on different operators in that area, on both smartcards and mobile apps
• use contactless payment on board for a ticket, or to tap in and out of your journey

As smart technology progresses and infrastructure is implemented, more options should become available with your public transport provider.
