Project Details

Description

BEAR Scotland has been commissioned by Transport Scotland to remove the existing central reservation vehicle restraint system (VRS) on the A9 on the Pass of Drumochter; and install a new continuous safety barrier including passively safe terminal. Any vegetation within 3m from the trunk road will be removed. This consists of small branches from self-seeded trees that will be cut as required and left in ‘habitat piles’ naturally to decompose.

The works are currently programmed to commence on 26/10/2026 for a duration of 20 days, between the working hours of 08:00 – 18:00. The works are required to protect errant vehicles from entering the central reserve area and reaching roadside hazards of watercourses, slopes and rock outcrops.

Traffic management (TM) will consist of lane 2 closure of the northbound (NB) dual carriageway only, with a temporary speed limit of 50mph on approach with a 30mph speed limit past the work areas in accordance with Traffic signs manual chapter 8. Due to the nature of the work, the restriction will be in effect for 24 hours a day.

A site compound is not required as all materials will be stored at BEAR Kingussie Depot and transported to site daily, as required. The site access will be determined on site by operatives. Access to junctions and private roads will be maintained.

Location

The scheme is located on a 2,380m stretch of the A9 trunk road within the Perth & Kinross Council administrative area, on the Pass of Drumochter (Figure 1), between the following National Grid References (NGRs): Start: NN 72097 70375; End: NN 69857 71454
