Description
Overlay resurfacing works are required to temporarily repair the existing A90 northbound carriageway surface due to structural issues such as cracking and water ingress.
The existing carriageway is comprised of reinforced concrete and is currently failing, nearing the end of its design life. The works are proposed as a short-term repair, in particular during the winter period while optioneering to determine long-term pavement treatment is undertaken.
In addition to the resurfacing works, approximately eight trial pits will be undertaken throughout the scheme extents. These are located adjacent to slot drains within hardstanding of the central reserve.
The scheme is located along the A90 Brechin Bypass, north of Brechin, between Each Inchock and Keithock, Angus. This section of the A90 is a dual carriageway, and the scheme is approximately 6.30 kilometres long, with a total area over 10 hectares.
Construction activities and the associated plant and machinery required are as follows:
- Implementation of Traffic Management (TM) and marking out site (TM plant);
- Milling of existing surfacing (planer, miller);
- Overlaying carriageway with 50mm make up (including 20mm SAMI layer and 30mm thin surface course);
- Reinstatement of road markings, linings, and studs (lorries/wagons and plant);
- Excavation of trial pits (approximately eight, at 700mm deep) within the central reserve; and,
- Removal of TM.
The proposed construction is programmed to be undertaken and completed within the 2025-2026 financial year. TM will in place 24/7, with works to be undertaken during day and night-time working hours to reduce the construction period. The works will last approximately four weeks.
TM will entail a combination of contraflow, overnight convoy and lane closures.
