Welcome

I am pleased to present the Transport Scotland Annual Review for 2010/11‚ reporting on some of our headline achievements over the year. During the year Transport Scotland merged with the Transport Directorate of the Scottish Government and the Agency now has responsibility for ferries and aviation as well as road and rail.

The Scottish Government has continued to make a substantial investment in transport projects and services – over £1.8 billion in
2010/11. This has enabled us to press ahead with major road and rail projects‚ including the M74 and M80‚ the Borders railway‚ and major improvements to the Edinburgh-Glasgow rail service. We have awarded the main contract for the construction of the new Forth Replacement Crossing. Many other projects across the length and breadth of the country have been funded‚ bringing significant economic benefits and making a real difference to the people and businesses of Scotland. Further details are set out in this Review.

The winter of 2010/11 was one of the worst on record. Roads‚ rail services and airports were all badly affected. Together with a wide range of organisations‚ we worked round the clock to keep Scotland moving and disruption to a minimum. We will continue to learn lessons for future winters.

Transport has a major part to play in meeting the challenging target set out in the Climate Change (Scotland) Act 2009 of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 80% by 2050. We have introduced measures to reduce as far as possible the carbon footprint at every stage of transport projects as well as funding a range of environmental projects.

A more detailed account of our activities during 2010/11 will be contained in our Annual Report and Accounts published later in the year.
