Partner Updates Across the West of Scotland

Members were asked to provide updates on their road safety activity with the following points being highlighted:

Argyll & Bute Council

  • Road Safety plan has recently been endorsed by committee.
  • Currently undertaking a pilot of traffic free streets around schools.
  • Looking to progress with pavement parking and 20 mph implementation.

Glasgow City Council

  • Received recognition for outstanding achievements in urban planning and transportation at the Scottish Transport Awards.
  • Developed campaigns on speed, to support the rollout of 20 mph, vulnerable road users and also ran an annual campaign on the safety at junctions.
  • Undertaking a pilot of signage to discourage pedal cyclists from entering motorway junctions.

South Lanarkshire Council

  • Undertaking various work on pavement parking and 20 mph limits.
  • Currently have two car free schools, with a consultation being undertaken and paper going to committee on these.

Renfrewshire Council

  • Increase focus on 20 mph rollout and pavement parking. However, this is currently not enforced.
  • Continuing with road safety workshops being delivered at schools.

Ayrshire Roads Alliance

  • Conducted a number of car seat safety clinics in partnership with SFRS.
  • Fit to ride motorcycle event is being planned to take place in Ayr.
  • A radio ad on the fatal 5 has been developed and will run to coincide with the 152nd Open at Royal Troon.

Dumfries and Galloway Council

  • Completed the introduction of 20 mph speed limits outside schools.
  • Looking to have the powers to enforce pavement parking in place by the end of the year.
  • Considering major junction upgrades to assist in the safety of pedestrians and cyclists.

Police Scotland

  • Road Policing West command has recently trained the majority of Greater Glasgow Local Policing Team Sergeants, to deliver the New Driver Early Intervention Scheme. This will increase the number of inputs delivered, and will increase capacity throughout the command area.
  • Officers from the National Motorcycle Unit are looking to gain funding to further support the rollout of Rider Refinement.

Scottish Ambulance Service

  • Continue to provide comprehensive training programmes for all drivers which is supported by appropriate safe driving and safe vehicle guidance.
  • Hosting a cycling awareness briefing at fortnightly staff engagement sessions, with input from Cycling Scotland.

Scottish Fire & Rescue Service

  • NexGen road safety event, 24 youths and parents attended, various ages between 14-17, virtual reality headsets utilised and fire appliance/equipment. Also ran Trailer Safety day.
  • North West 200 road safety event. Engaging with motorcyclists and car drivers to provide road safety messages, promoting CPR.
  • ‘Street Feet’ continuing to be delivered across the area, mainly to nursery children.
  • Continue to carry out road safety education sessions.

ScORSA

  • Delivered a number of ‘Road Safety Hours’ which have looked at the role of the Traffic Commissioner, HGVs, fatigue and GIG economy.

Cycling Scotland

  • Give Cycle Space campaign ran between 29 April and 24 May with strong support from stakeholders and influencers. The social media content for the campaign had a reach of over 270K across various platforms.
  • National funding continues to be used to deliver both cycling and cycle awareness courses for drivers/learner drivers across Scotland. Cycle awareness has been delivered to interested road safety stakeholders and fleet operators.
