Our Targets - A Step Towards Our Vision

Our Targets - A Step Towards Our Vision

It is important to acknowledge the challenges that still lie ahead for all of us. "Reported Road Casualties 2012" did contain some bad news in some of the figures for vulnerable road users. However, our overall road casualty figures in Scotland are still on a downward trajectory. We have already achieved some of the 2015 milestone targets, and are well on our way to achieving the 2020 targets set out in the Road Safety Framework. It is right that we take stock periodically, and give credit where credit is due to the many people around Scotland who are working hard to keep their fellow citizens safe on our roads. Partnership remains key as we continue to work together towards our targets with the help of our partners in local authorities, the emergency services, safety and motoring organisations and all road users as set out in the Framework.

We also firmly believe in the value of having targets to enable a clear focus for the effort and resources of all partners. This view has been strongly supported by leading road safety experts, both in Scotland and further afield. Our casualty reduction targets for Scotland cover the period from 1 January 2011 to 31 December 2020, as set out in table 2 below.

Table 2: Scottish road safety targets to 2020, with milestones to 2015, compared with average Scottish figures for 2004/08
Target 2004/2008 Average 2015 Milestones 2020 Target
Fatalities 292 204 (30% reduction) 175 (40% reduction)
Serious casualties 2,604 1,484 (43% reduction) 1,172 (55% reduction)
Child fatalities 15 10 (35% reduction) 8 (50% reduction)
Serious child casualties 325 163 (50% reduction) 114 (65% reduction)

We are continuing to work towards a 10% reduction target in the slight casualty rate to 2020.
