Our Challenges

Transport Scotland continuously monitors the many challenges to providing good service to our customers. A summary of the most significant challenges to delivering our asset management objectives are below. Further details on how we address these challenges are available in the RAMP.

Condition and Aging Infrastructure

Our aging road infrastructure is likely to require increased maintenance and funding to deliver safe, reliable journeys and satisfied customers.

Climate Change Resilience

The effects of climate change may lead to more frequent asset and network failures, leading to increased journey times, reduced safety, and increased maintenance costs.

Biodiversity

The rising rates of pollution, changing weather conditions, and destruction of natural habitats has accelerated biodiversity loss across the network.

Network Resilience

The unavailability of roads due to unplanned events (e.g., severe winter weather conditions) is a significant risk to our operations, leading to delays, safety issues, and reduced customer satisfaction.

Carbon

Transport Scotland’s activities may contribute to carbon emissions, causing damage to the environment.

Budget

Balancing planned and reactive maintenance with limited budgets, and minimising potential impacts on network availability, long-term asset condition and overall costs

Safety

Incidents on the network could lead to severe injury or fatalities.

Customer Satisfaction

Technological advancements, changing economic factors and global events (such as COVID-19) are constantly evolving the needs of our customers.

Traffic Information

If customers cannot access timely and accurate information, they are unable to make informed journey decisions, leading to increased frustration, missed connections, and potential safety hazards.

Data

If the right data is not available at the right time, this will impact our ability to make informed decisions, which may mean we deliver less value to our customers.
