Trips and journeys
2.1. Trips and journeys are used interchangeably in this publication. Each trip or journey is made up of one or more parts or stages eg a journey to work could include a drive to the station and a train.
Mode and Main mode
2.2. Tables by Mode- stages of journeys are recorded by the use of different modes. For example, a 2 mile drive to the station followed by a 15 mile train journey, then a 1 mile walk would count as three stages of a journey. A 20 minute cycle, followed by a 40 minute train journey and a 15 minute cycle would also be recorded as a journey with three stages.
2.3. Tables by Main mode - the 'main' mode is that used for the longest (by distance) part of the journey and all information is recorded against that. For example a 2 mile drive to the station followed by a 15 mile train journey, then a 1 mile walk would count as an 18 mile journey mainly by train.
2.4. A 20 minute cycle, followed by a 40 minute train journey and a 15 minute cycle would count as a 75 minute journey mainly by train as the train journey is likely to cover most of the distance.
