5. Conclusion
5.1. The headline numbers from the National Travel Survey compared here are broadly in line with those reported by the Scottish Household Survey and SHS Travel Diary. Where there are differences that fall out with the likely confidence intervals, these can be explained by methodological differences.
5.2. As an example of an indicator from the main survey, driving licence possession is comparable from both sources.
5.3. Comparing the one day and seven day travel diary information, suggests similar numbers of journeys and time spent travelling. Distance estimates from the SHS Travel Diary are below those reported in the NTS which is explained by the different methodologies used.
5.4. The SHS Travel Diary has not been designed to be representative of annual travel patterns however this analysis suggests it would be worthwhile undertaking further work to look into the possibility of calculating annual estimates.
