3. Who travels most often?

  • In 2012, 73 per cent of respondents reported travel the previous day.
  • There was a decrease of 7 percentage points in those travelling the previous day between 2007 and 2012, levels have been stable over the last couple of years.
  • Men were more likely to have travelled than women (75% vs 72%)
  • Older people were less likely to travel, with those aged 80 and over carrying out the least travel of any age group (40%).

Gender and Age

3.1 Seventy-three per cent of respondents reported travel the previous day in 2012. The proportion of adults travelling the previous day in 2012 decreased by 7 percentage points from 2007. This decrease can be seen for both men and women and across all age bands. [Table 1]

3.2 Respondents aged 80 and over were less likely than other age group to have travelled the previous day - 40 per cent compared to the next lowest of 64 per cent (70 -79 year olds). [Table 1], [Figure 1]

3.3 Whilst there was actually a decrease of 9 percentage points in the percentage of those aged over 80 travelling in 2012, this was a return to 2010 levels (39%) and the sample size is relatively small compared to other age bands. [Table 1]

3.4 In 2012, as in previous years, men were more likely to have travelled on the previous day than women (75% vs 72%). [Table 1]
