5. Why are people travelling?

  • Almost a quarter (23%) of all journeys in 2012 were for commuting purposes.
  • Twenty-two per cent of journeys were for shopping.

1 Changes to the questionnaire design in 2012 resulted in a higher proportion of journeys being recorded as 'Go home'. This creates a discontinuity in the time series between 2011 and 2012.

5.1 Leisure activities, including eating/drinking, sport/entertainment, holidays, and going for a walk, represented 13 per cent of all journeys. A further 10 per cent came from visiting friends and relatives. [Table 3] [Figure 3]

5.2 Note that changes in survey methodology have resulted in an increase in the proportion of journeys with a purpose of 'go home' and 'Go for a walk'. This should be considered when comparing 2012 data with previous years.
