7. Distance and Duration

  • Seventy-nine per cent of journeys were less than 10 km in 2012, with half (52%)
being less than 3 km and a quarter (26%) were less than 1 km.
  • Seventy two per cent of journeys lasted 20 minutes or less

Figure 5: Distance travelled (percentage of journeys), 2012

7.1 In 2012, the average (mean) journey distance was 8.3 km, compared to a median of only 2.7 km, this shows that half of all journeys were less than 1 ⅔ miles (1 mile = 1.6
kms). [Table 5]

7.2 Previous analysis has suggested that this is because the majority of journeys are undertaken in urban areas, and journeys in these areas cover a shorter distance than those in rural areas4.

7.3 The vast majority of journeys (85%) were less than 30 minutes in duration; only 4 per cent were over an hour. Distance and duration are obviously related, dependent on other factors such as travel mode. Therefore, it makes sense that the majority of journeys are short in duration since the majority of journeys are short in distance. [Table 6].
