The TRAP Approach

The TRAP is based on the most up to date climate change projections (UKCP18) and risk assessments, building on previous studies undertaken. It is based on best practice in climate risk assessment and adaptation planning, in line with international standard ISO14092:2021. The TRAP is structured around three key outputs: (1) baseline screening, (2) future climate risk assessment and (3) adaptation planning, as seen in Figure 1:

Figure 1: TRAP Design Structure

Baseline Screening

  • Assessment of hazard exposure and asset vulnerability across the trunk road network to inform strategic climate adaptation and prioritise resilience-building measures at high-risk locations.

Future Climate Risk Assessment

  • Assessment of future climate hazards using UKCP18 projections to evaluate likelihood, exposure, and vulnerability, informing long-term risk scores and resilience planning for Scotland’s trunk road network.

Adaptation Plan

  • Framework for delivering targeted climate adaptation actions across the trunk road network, supported by measurable indicators to monitor progress, effectiveness, and resilience outcomes over time.
