The A68, A6091/A7 and A702 Trunk Roads (Temporary 20mph Speed Restriction) Order 2024

Notice of Direction under section 15(3) of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984

The Scottish Ministers have directed that, as they propose to make provision to reproduce the effect of The A68 (Lauder and Jedburgh) A6091/A7 (Selkirk and Hawick) A702 (West Linton and Carlops) Trunk Roads (Temporary 20mph Speed Restriction) Order 2024 (S.S.I. 2024/47) but that in consequence of the procedure required to be followed in connection with making that provision it cannot come into operation until the temporary order ceases to be in force, the temporary order shall continue in force.

The order has the effect of temporarily imposing a 20mph speed restriction on the following lengths of road:

  1. That length of the A68 Edinburgh – Carter Bar Trunk Road at Jedburgh from a point 27.5 metres or thereby south of its junction with High Street, northwards on Bongate and Edinburgh Road to a point 33 metres or thereby north of its junction with Headrig, a distance of 733 metres or thereby.
  2. That length of the A68 Edinburgh – Carter Bar Trunk Road at Lauder from a point 112 metres or thereby south of its junction with Thirlestane Drive, north westwards on East High Street, West High Street and Edinburgh Road to a point 38 metres or thereby north west of its junction with the DL18/5 Whitlaw Road Industrial Estate, a distance of 1.55 kilometres or thereby.
  3. That length of the A6091/A7 Melrose – Galashiels – Carlisle Trunk Road at Hawick from a point 41 metres or thereby north east of its junction with East Stewart Place, southwards on Wilton Hill, along North Bridge Roundabout circulation lanes, south westwards on Commercial Road, southwards on Albert Road, along Sandbed Roundabout circulation lanes, westwards on Buccleuch Street and Buccleuch Road to a point 242 metres or thereby south west of its junction with the private road known as Buccleuch Road, a distance of 2.25 kilometres or thereby
  4. That length of the A6091/A7 Melrose – Galashiels – Carlisle Trunk Road at Selkirk from a point 154 metres or thereby south east of its junction with High School Lane, generally westwards on Hillside Terrace, Tower Street, High Street, Market Place and then generally northwards on Ettrick Terrace to a point 83 metres or thereby north of its junction with Chapel Street, a distance of 963 metres or thereby.
  5. That length of the A702 Edinburgh – Abington Trunk Road at West Linton from a point 88 metres or thereby north east of its junction with Chapel Brae, north eastwards on Dolphinton Road and Carlops Road to a point 167 metres or thereby north east of its junction with School Brae, a distance of 420 metres or thereby.
  6. That length of the A702 Edinburgh – Abington Trunk Road at Carlops from a point 118 metres or thereby south of its junction with D1/1 Kitleyknowe, to a point 277 metres or thereby north of its junction with D94/1 Allan Ramsay Square, a distance of 762 metres or thereby.
    The order, which was required for the interest of road safety was in operation from 16th February 2024. It would have expired on 4th April 2024 and will now continue in force until 4th October 2024 unless a further direction under section 15(3) of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984 is given, or the order is revoked or amended.

The Order does not apply to vehicles falling within regulation 3(4) of the Road Traffic Exemptions (Special Forces) (Variation and Amendment) Regulations 2011 when used in accordance with regulation 3(5) of those Regulations; or vehicles being used in an emergency for coastguard purposes.
