The A7 Trunk Road (Hawick) (20mph and 30mph Speed Limit) Order 2024

The Scottish Ministers hereby give notice that they propose to make the above Order under sections 82(2)(a) and (b), 83(1), 84(1)(a), and 124(1)(d) of, and paragraph 27 of schedule 9 of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984, which will have the effect of de-restricting and imposing a 20mph and 30mph speed limits on the following lengths of road:-

Derestricting of Road

That length of the A6091/A7 Melrose – Galashiels – Carlisle Trunk Road at Hawick from a point 67 metres north of its northerly junction with Burnfoot Road, southwards to a point 242 metres south west of its junction with the private road known as Buccleuch Road, a distance of 2.79 kilometres or thereby.

20mph Speed Restriction

That length of the A6091/A7 Melrose – Galashiels – Carlisle Trunk Road at Hawick from a point 41 metres north east of its junction with East Stewart Place, southwards on Wilton Hill, along North Bridge Roundabout circulation lanes, south westwards on Commercial Road, southwards on Albert Road, along Sandbed Roundabout circulation lanes, westwards on Buccleuch Street and Buccleuch Road to a point 230 metres south of its junction with Buccleuch Road (private road), a distance of 2.25 kilometres or thereby

30mph Speed Restriction

That length of the A6091/A7 Melrose – Galashiels – Carlisle Trunk Road at Hawick from a point 320 metres south of its junction with Guthrie Drive, south west to a point 41 metres north east of its junction with East Stewart Place, a distance of 542 metres or thereby.

Full details of the proposal are contained in the Order which, together with a plan showing the length of road involved, a statement of the Scottish Ministers’ reasons for proposing to make the Order and a copy of the order being revoked/amended, may be examined free of charge during normal business hours from 23rd February until 22nd March 2024 from the office of Transport Scotland, George House, 2nd Floor, 36 North Hanover Street, Glasgow, G1 2AD. The documents will also be available at Hawick Contact Centre, Town Hall, High Street, Hawick, TD9 9EF & Hawick Library, North Bridge Street, Hawick TD9 9QT.

Any person wishing to object to the proposed Order should send details of the grounds for objection in writing to the Director of Road, c/o Ben Toyer, Transport Scotland, George House, 36 North Hanover Street, Glasgow, G1 2AD quoting reference SE/A7Hawick/BT or by email to TRO-Objections@transport.gov.scot by 22nd March 2024.

Statement of Reasons

The Scottish Ministers aim to promote the safe and efficient use of the roads for which they are responsible.

The Scottish Ministers are satisfied that the introduction of a 20mph Speed Limit and 30mph Speed Limit for the purpose of reducing the speed of motor vehicles will be in the interests of road safety.

The Order also derestricts the length of road described in Part 1 of the schedule of the Order.
