Statement of Reasons

Statement of The Scottish Ministers Reasons for Promoting a 40mph Speed Limit on the A84 at Kildean and Craigforth, Stirling

A speed limit of 40mph on the A84 Trunk Road at Kildean and Craigforth, Stirling is proposed in the interests of road safety and to help ensure the safe passage of all road users and to encourage active travel. It is anticipated that the lower speed limit will enable greater use of off-carriageway cycle routes, which are planned for upgrades and better highlight the presence of non-motorised users to vehicle drivers by emphasising the more developed character of the Trunk Road.

The extents of the new 40mph speed limit covers the length of the A84 Stirling - Lochearnhead Trunk Road from the point where it meets the A84 Millennium Way, including the Kildean roundabout circulation lanes, westwards, including the Craigforth roundabout circulation lanes, westwards, including the Stirling Auction Mart roundabout circulation lanes, westwards to a point 85 metres or thereby west of the Stirling Auction Mart roundabout, a distance of 1.52 kilometres or thereby.

The eastern extent of the new 40mph speed limit is the Kildean Roundabout and was chosen to integrate with existing speed limits on the local road network. The western extent of the 40mph speed limit was chosen to reflect the change in character of the Trunk Road from rural to more developed.
