The A87 Trunk Road (Breakish) (40mph Speed Limit) Order 202

The Scottish Ministers hereby give notice that they propose to make the above Order under sections 84(1)(a), and 124(1)(d) of, and paragraph 27 of schedule 9, of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984 which will have effect of imposing a 40mph speed limit on that length of the A87 Invergarry - Uig Trunk Road, from a point 48 metres or thereby northwest of the extended centre line of the U4792 Waterloo Road, Broadford, generally in a northeast direction to a point 318 metres or thereby northeast of the extended centre line of the C1238 Upper Breakish - Lower Breakish Road (Northeastern) junction for a distance of 3.88 kilometres or thereby.

The effect of the Order is to extend the current 40mph speed limit on this length of the A87 to reduce westbound approach speeds to the narrow Ashaig Bridge.

Full details of the proposal are contained in the Order which, together with a plan showing the length of road involved, a statement of the Scottish Ministers’ reasons for proposing to make the Order and a copy of the order being revoked, may be examined free of charge during normal business hours from 18 March to 15 April 2022 at Broadford Post Office, Ford Rd, Isle of Skye IV49 9AB.

Any person wishing to object to the proposed Order should send details of the grounds for objection by email to TRO-Objections@transport.gov.scot or in writing to the Director of Roads, c/o Jack Rorison, Transport Scotland, Buchanan House, 58 Port Dundas Road, Glasgow, G4 0HF quoting reference NW/A87/JR by 15 April 2022.

Statement of reasons

The Scottish Ministers are satisfied that to extend the 40mph speed restriction on the A87 Invergarry – Uig Trunk Road further east of Ashaig Bridge will be in the interests of road safety. The current terminal point of the existing 40mph speed limit at the eastern end of Breakish is in close proximity to the narrow Ashaig Bridge where eastbound traffic is required to give-way to those travelling in the opposite direction. This creates conflict between opposing traffic flows, particularly when travelling at higher speeds. The extension of the 40mph speed restriction is intended to reduce westbound approach speeds to the narrow bridge and reduce conflict by allowing longer reaction time. Relocating the speed limit signs away from the priority signs should make the speed limit more prominent and enhance compliance.
