A9 Dualling: Tomatin to Moy – Temporary diversion of National Cycle Network Route 7

In order to facilitate continuing construction work to dual the A9 between Tomatin and Moy, road users and cyclists are advised that a temporary diversion of the National Cycle Network route 7 (NCN7) is required to allow work to progress. This diversion will ensure that access to the NCN7 is maintained and that the safety of NCN7 users and our workforce continues to be protected.

The diversion route will become operational on 22 August and is expected to remain in place until the dualling becomes operational in Spring 2028.

Temporary diversion of the NCN7 route

Once in place, the temporary diversion will not impact road users or affect road journey times, however road users are advised to approach the area with care due to non-motorised users crossing.

The diverted section of the current National Cycle Network 7 route will be approx 3.5km in length and will begin approximately 1km north of the Tomatin junction.

The diversion will cross the A9 at the temporary Invereen roundabout, there will be a reduced speed limit on approach and enhanced road markings for cyclists, with lighting in place at the crossing to improve vision in low-light conditions and barriers to prevent cyclists crossing at speed.

Following this, the route will then cross the access road at Balfour Beatty’s site compound, with an uncontrolled crossing in place indicated safety signage to ensure segregation between users from construction and farm traffic.

The route continues around the compound and towards the A9 at Dalmagarry Quarry for around 500m, travelling adjacent to road traffic, before exiting at Ruthven Road junction. A clear division will be maintained between cyclist and road traffic through the use of vehicle restraint barriers.

The route will then travel across a temporary bridge at Dalmagarry Burn onwards to Dalmagarry Farm, before the route will then rejoin the National Cycle Network 7 on the B9154 to Moy.

The location and layout of these works are outlined below.

To ensure this diversion remains fit for public access throughout the project, it will be inspected weekly by Balfour Beatty. In addition, QR codes will be installed at various stages throughout the route where the public can report any concerns they may have with the route.

Non-motorised users and road users are advised to approach the area with care and allow extra time for their journeys whilst these works are undertaken.

The work to install this diversion route is weather dependent and subject to change, please refer to the Traffic Scotland website for updates.
