Finalised road casualty statistics for 2025

Finalised statistics released today by Transport Scotland confirm there was a decrease in the number of people killed in reported road collisions in Scotland in 2025 compared to 2024. There was also a reduction in overall casualties over the same period.

The Reported Road Casualties publication released today by Transport Scotland Statisticians provides finalised figures for the number of people injured or killed as a result of road collisions. Provisional figures were published in June in the Key Reported Road Casualties publication.

The finalised statistics for 2025 show 133 people were killed in reported road collisions in Scotland in 2025, 27 less than the 160 reported in 2024.

The number of people seriously injured in 2025 was 1,908, 70 (four percent) less than 2024. Slight casualties decreased by two percent (from 3,594 in 2024 to 3,517 in 2025) meaning that total casualties reduced by three percent (from 5,732 to 5,558).

Road casualties have increased since 2020 and 2021 when the Covid-19 pandemic restrictions led to reduced travel. However, in 2025 the number of fatalities was the lowest recorded in a non-pandemic year.

Scotland’s current Road Safety Framework, contains four national targets for casualty reductions due for delivery in 2030. These targets compare performance to a 2014-2018 baseline.

Target 2030 target reduction 2025 achieved reduction
People killed 50% 23%
People seriously injured 50% 30%
Children (aged < 16) killed 60% 46%
Children (aged < 16) seriously injured 60% 33%

The figures released today were produced by independent statistical staff free from any political interference, in accordance with professional standards set out in the Code of Practice for Official Statistics.
