Balmedie to Tipperty

Interactive map available at the AWPR Go North East site

This 12km section of road represents around one-fifth of the entire AWPR/B-T project and includes the provision of 9km of new dual carriageway to replace the existing single carriageway between Balmedie and Bridgend, together with 3km of improvements to the existing dual carriageway.

Blackdog to Balmedie

The existing dual carriageway between Blackdog and Balmedie has been improved as part of the project and will continue to provide two lanes in each direction. These works included the closure of existing at-grade junctions on the A90 between these locations, together with the provision of new link roads, to improve road safety.

Balmedie Junction

Balmedie Junction replaces the at-grade junction just south of Balmedie on the existing dual carriageway with a new grade separated junction providing access in all directions. The existing A90 remains at its previous level, and a new road has been constructed to pass beneath the A90, linked on each side of the A90 to two new roundabouts. The roundabout on the west side of the A90 connects the northbound merge and diverge loop slip roads, as well as the realigned B977 and a road providing local access to Milden. The roundabout on the east side of the A90 connects the southbound merge and diverge loop slip roads, as well as Old Road and Eigie Road, leading to Balmedie.  Traffic travelling north or south on the A90 will be able to use this junction to access locations east and west of the A90, and traffic arriving from the east or west will be able to use this junction to travel north or south on the A90.

Balmedie Junction

Balmedie to A975 Newburgh Road

North of Balmedie Junction, around 1km of existing dual carriageway has been improved before the new dual carriageway continues west of the existing A90 for about 4.5km to the A975, which is realigned to pass beneath the new A90. The dual carriageway will provide two lanes in each direction throughout this length.

Newburgh Road Junction

Newburgh Road Junction links the realigned A975 with the A90, and includes slip roads which link a northbound diverge from the A90 to the A975 at a give-way ‘T’ junction and a southbound merge to the A90 from the A975 via a give-way ‘T’ junction. Traffic travelling north on the A90 will be able to use this junction to access locations east and west of the A90, and traffic arriving from the east or west will be able to use this junction to travel south on the A90.

Newburgh Junction

A975 Newburgh Road to B9000

North of the realigned A975 the new dual carriageway crosses the route of the existing A90 and continues east of that route for around 3km to the B9000, which is realigned to pass beneath the new A90. The dual carriageway will provide two lanes in each direction throughout this length.

Tipperty Junction

Tipperty Junction links the realigned B9000 with the A90, and includes slip roads which link a northbound merge to the A90 from the B9000 via a roundabout west of the new dual carriageway, and a southbound diverge from the A90 to from the B9000 via a give-way ‘T’ junction.  The roundabout west of the new dual carriageway also provides links to the existing A90 towards Foveran and the existing B9000 towards Tipperty. Traffic travelling south on the A90 will be able to use this junction to access locations east and west of the A90, and traffic arriving from the east or west will be able to use this junction to travel north on the A90.

Tipperty Junction

B9000 to Bridgend

North of the realigned B9000 the new dual carriageway continues for approximately 1.5km to its tie-in to the existing dual carriageway A90 to the south of Tipperty, where the existing centre reserve opening at Bridgend will be closed. The dual carriageway will provide two lanes in each direction throughout this length.
