A9 Berriedale Braes Improvement Project
Overview
The difficult topography meant that two HGVs driving in opposite directions could not pass on the hairpin bend as one vehicle took up most of the road in order to negotiate the bend.
The purpose of the scheme was to remove the hairpin bend and improve the alignment of the carriageway. The travelling public will now enjoy a safer and more comfortable travel experience on this stretch of the A9.
The new road opened to road users on 21 August 2020 - which has improved journey times and road safety by removing the need for vehicles to slow down or stop to negotiate the bend.
