M8 Woodside viaducts - Permanent work

Transport Scotland is taking forward the design development of the permanent works for the M8 Woodside Viaducts.

The viaducts carry the M8 Motorway through the north of Glasgow and are situated between Junction 16 (Craighall) and Junction 17 (Charing Cross).

The M8 Woodside Viaducts permanent works is a priority project providing services to communities throughout west central Scotland

The long-term plan is to maintain and invest in the trunk road network to ensure that it continues to serve the wide range of transport needs and the Scottish economy for many years to come.

Overview

The permanent works are required to provide a long-term response to the issues that have given rise to the need for temporary propping works.

Whilst the temporary propping works, when complete, will allow reopening of all traffic lanes on the M8, they are a temporary solution and result in significant impacts on the local road network and the area under and around the viaducts. It is therefore necessary to consider the appropriate long-term permanent works that should be implemented to address these issues.

Next Steps

The project development process is set out below. At present the project is at the strategic options stage. At this time three strategic approaches for the permanent works are being considered: Repair, Replace or Remove. Further information on these strategic approaches can be found in the brochure below.

As part of the current stage of work public consultation was undertaken between 25 February and 25 March 2026. We appreciate the feedback to this consultation from those who attended in person exhibitions or viewed the information available via the online exhibition. The feedback received is being reviewed and will inform completion of the strategic options stage of the project and work undertaken for the detailed options stage. Further public consultation will be undertaken to inform completion of the detailed options stage.
