3. Who travels most often?
- In 2011, 73 per cent of respondents reported travel the previous day.
- There was a decrease of 7 percentage points in those travelling the previous day between 2007 and 2011.
- Men were more likely to have travelled than women (76% vs 71%)
- Older people were less likely to travel, with those aged 80 and over carrying out the least travel of any age group (49%).
Gender and Age
3.1 Seventy-three per cent of respondents reported travel the previous day in 2011. The proportion of adults travelling the previous day in 2011 decreased by 7 percentage points from 2007. This decrease can be seen for both men and women and across all age bands. [Table 1]
3.2 Respondents aged 80 and over were less likely than other age group to have travelled the previous day - 49 per cent compared to the next lowest of 64 per cent (70 -79 year olds). [Table 1], [Figure 1]
3.3 Whilst there was actually an increase of 10 percentage points in the percentage of those aged over 80 travelling in 2011, this was a return to a broadly similar level to 2007 and suggests that the figure for 2010 (39%) may have been unusually low. [Table 1]
