Scottish Household Survey: Travel Diary 2011

9. Travel between council areas

9.1 Most journeys begin and end in the same council area. Even in the council area where journeys were most likely to end in another authority (Glasgow), such journeys accounted for less than a third of the total. Journeys starting in Highlands & Islands and Grampian were most likely to end in the same authority (both 95%). [Table 13]

9.2 Most adults who travel to work reside in the same council area as their workplace. This is most true for Grampian, where 91% of those who are employed (and do not work from home) work within Grampian. [Table 15]

9.3 A significant proportion of adults in council areas bordering Glasgow and Edinburgh travel to work in the 2 cities. For example, 36 per cent of employed adults who live in the Lothians (and do not work from home) work in Edinburgh. [Table 15]
