Senior Driver Evaluation

Sarah Ritchie provided an overview of the Senior Driver Fitness to Drive Project, delivered in Aberdeenshire and support through the Road Safety Framework Fund.

The project aimed to improve road safety for all road users across the North East by funding Senior Driver Evaluations for older drivers with referrals coming from Police Scotland, the NHS and the DVLA.

A Senior Driver Evaluation differs from a driving test as it is designed to assess an individual's driving skills and provide an honest and impartial opinion of their ability to continue driving safely.

Drivers participated in an evaluation for a variety of reasons, including:

  • Exploring vehicle modification options due to a physical disability.
  • Confirming their ability to drive safely following a recent diagnosis or change in their medical condition.
  • Seeking reassurance and confidence in their driving ability.

Discussion following the project overview focused on:

  • Current assessment referral process through the DVLA and timescale.
  • NHS / Opticians channels and awareness of the referral process.

Action: Secretariat to share the Senior Driver Fitness to Drive Evaluation with members.
