Section 149 of the Equality Act 2010 sets out a ‘public sector equality duty’ focused around eliminating discrimination, advancing equality of opportunity and fostering good relations between people with specific ‘protected characteristics’ (i.e. demographic attributes), as defined in the Act.

In Scotland, the Environmental Assessment (Scotland) Act 2005 requires public bodies to assess, consult and monitor the likely significant impacts of their plans, programmes or strategies on the environment.

Section 1 of the Children and Young People (Scotland) Act 2014 requires the Scottish Ministers to consider whether policies have impacts on children and young people and to assess what further action is required to ensure compliance with the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC).
