National Transport Strategy - the next steps

The new National Transport Strategy for Scotland (NTS2) sets out a vision for a transport system which will protect our climate and improve lives over the next 20 years.

NTS2 was developed in collaboration with more than 60 partner organisations around Scotland and a consultation on the draft version ran from July to October 2019.

Publication and the Transport (Scotland) Act 2019

The National Transport Strategy will be laid before Parliament in February 2020. This is a requirement of the Transport (Scotland) Act 2019 which puts into law the need for Scottish Ministers to develop a National Transport Strategy for Scotland.

The final version of NTS2 will also be published online alongside a consultation report.

We are now developing a Delivery Plan which will outline how we will deliver the vision and priorities of the NTS2 from 2020 onwards.

NTS2 and the Strategic Transport Projects Review

The second Strategic Transport Projects Review (STPR2) will help to deliver the vision, priorities and outcomes featured in NTS2 and will give Scottish Ministers a programme of potential transport investment opportunities for the period 2022-2042.

Workshops have been held across Scotland as part of our engagement work for STPR2. We also ran a survey to gather views on strategic transport-related problems and opportunities as well as potential investment options.

Schools have featured too, with our Journeys of the Future education programme giving pupils the opportunity to get involved in future transport planning.
